PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS
The prostate gland is a walnut sized male reproductive organ located below
the bladder and in front of the rectum.  African American men have the highest
rate of prostate cancer in the world.  There are usually no noticeable symptoms
of prostate cancer while it is still in the early stages like frequent urination, blood
in urine and pain with urination.  This is why screening for prostate cancer is so
critical.  Every African American man age 40 or older should have an annual
screen for prostate cancer.  Prostate screening consists of two examinations
which include both a blood test (PSA) and a physical exam of the prostate
(digital rectal exam).  If either exam is abnormal a repeat at a shorter interval or
a biopsy may be recommended.  Another reason that screening is critical is that
nearly 100% of African American men diagnosed with early stage prostate
cancer are alive in five years compared to 29% of late staged disease.
Treatment usually consists of either or a combination of surgery, hormonal or
radiation treatment.  The risk of prostate cancer can be lowered by increasing
fruits and vegetables, decreasing red meat intake, losing weight and smoking
cessation.  The take home point though is that early detection is the key to
surviving prostate cancer.
