Dropout Prevention Program
Project Chance: “A Positive Approach to Change”
Project Chance is a Dropout Prevention Pilot Program that was founded by Senator E.B. McClain and
former Representative Lawrence McAdory in 1996 in collaboration with Dr. Ethal Hall, a member of the
Alabama Department of Education and Dr. Yvette Richardson, former Superintendent of Fairfield Board
of Education.

The project offers a second chance for educational success to students who have been separated from
the public school system. It formerly targeted inner-city students in Fairfield and Bessemer who were
experiencing problems. Presently it extends instructions to students in other areas in Birmingham to
master the GED test.

Project Chance is a community-based program housed in the Mt. Pilgrim D.W. C. Sports Complex.
Project Chance supports the principle that education is a necessary tool for success and it gives young
people a second chance to achieve their education, as well as, preparing them to function in today’s
society.

Project Chance perceives parenting as an intervention. Meetings have been held for the purpose of
parental education, parental partnership, parental collaboration to strengthen and motivate students to
complete their education.

Project Chance has had many successful graduate students. Several of the former students are currently
attending college or have graduated from various Institutions of higher learning.
